Reported only when the entire aircraft is beyond the relevant runway-holding position.
Runway exit lights
Alternating green and yellow centreline lights that turn all green once clear of the protected area.
After landing flow
Started only when clear of the runway, while the pilot taxiing stays heads-up.
Mandatory instruction sign
White on red. Do not pass without ATC clearance.
Location and direction signs
Location is yellow on black, direction is black on yellow with an arrow.
Runway-holding position marking
Two solid and two dashed yellow lines. The solid lines are on the holding side.
Stop bar
A row of red lights across the taxiway. Hold until it is switched off, even with a clearance.
Hotspot
A charted location with a history or risk of runway incursions.
Anti-collision beacon
On means engines running or about to start. Switched off only once the engines have stopped.
Engine cooling period
The manufacturer's idle time before shutdown, often used up during taxi-in.
Hot brakes and fusible plugs
Brakes can keep heating after stopping. Never approach a hot wheel in line with its axle.
Single-engine taxi-in
Saves fuel where permitted, while still allowing the shut down engine its cooling period.

Chapter check, question 1 of 12

When may the pilot report RUNWAY VACATED after landing, if ATC requests the report?

737 taxi-in and shutdown questions

When can a pilot report runway vacated?

Only when the whole aircraft is beyond the relevant runway-holding position. The nose on the taxiway is not enough if the tail is still inside.

What do the green and yellow taxiway lights mean when leaving the runway?

Exit centreline lights alternate green and yellow through the area protecting the runway and ILS. Beyond it they are all green, but the holding position still decides when the runway is vacated.

Can you cross a lit stop bar with a clearance?

No. Stop and hold at a lit stop bar and query ATC. Proceed only once the red lights are switched off and you have the ATC clearance.

When is the anti-collision beacon switched off after landing?

Only once the engines have stopped. Ground crew treat a lit beacon as engines running or about to start and stay clear.
