Every candidate for an Indian Commercial Pilot Licence or Airline Transport Pilot Licence clears a set of written papers set by the DGCA: Air Navigation, Aviation Meteorology, Air Regulation and Technical General, with Technical Specific taken on type and RTR(A) conducted separately. The papers are multiple choice, the pass mark is 70 percent, there is no negative marking, a subject pass is valid for five years, and there is a 30-day wait before re-attempting a paper. Since late 2025 the exams are fully paperless and the computer number is generated through DigiLocker.
