What chart scale means

Scale is the relationship between a length measured on a chart and the corresponding distance on the Earth. It tells you how strongly the real world has been reduced to fit the sheet.

Definition and basic relationship

The two lengths must refer to the same two positions. They must also be expressed in the same unit before a numerical scale is formed. Once the units match, they cancel and the scale becomes a dimensionless ratio.

Representative fraction

A representative fraction, abbreviated RF, is written with 1 as the numerator. On a 1:500,000 chart, 1 centimetre represents 500,000 centimetres, and 1 inch represents 500,000 inches. The ratio works with any unit because the same unit is used above and below the fraction.

Maps and charts

A map normally carries general geographical detail. An aeronautical chart selects and presents information needed for navigation. Either may have a scale, and the mathematical meaning of that scale is identical.

Scale problems are unit problems. The arithmetic is simple once chart length and Earth distance have been converted into the same unit.

A reliable unit workflow

  1. Write the scale equation before entering numbers.
  2. Choose centimetres throughout or inches throughout.
  3. Convert the Earth distance into that same unit.
  4. Substitute only after units match.
  5. Write RF with numerator 1 and state the denominator clearly.

Worked conversion

Suppose 1 inch represents 10 nautical miles. Ten nautical miles = 10 × 6,080 feet = 60,800 feet. Multiplying by 12 gives 729,600 inches. The scale is therefore 1 inch ÷ 729,600 inches, or 1:729,600.

Rounding

Some book problems use rounded conversion factors, so two correct methods may differ slightly. Keep unrounded calculator values until the final step, then select the nearest sensible answer.

Common errorThe denominator is not a distance with its old unit still attached. After the units cancel, it is a pure number.

Reading word and graduated scales

A word scale and a graduated bar avoid some arithmetic, but only when the chart is used exactly as printed and the correct bar is selected.

Statement in words

A statement such as 1 centimetre represents 5 kilometres is already a usable conversion. It also converts directly to RF: 5 kilometres = 500,000 centimetres, so the RF is 1:500,000. A statement of 1 centimetre to 5.4 nautical miles gives approximately 1:1,000,000.

Graduated scale line

A graduated line is normally printed near the chart margin. Place dividers across the chart distance, then transfer the span to the correct bar. A bar may show nautical miles, statute miles or kilometres, so read its label before measuring.

Latitude as a scale

Because one minute of latitude represents one nautical mile, a correctly constructed latitude scale can serve as a graduated distance line. Whether the scale remains valid everywhere depends on the projection. On a chart with variable scale, measure distance against the latitude scale at the appropriate latitude, not against an unrelated part of the margin.

Printed size matters

A graduated bar remains useful if a chart is enlarged or reduced with the bar, because both change in the same proportion. A written RF becomes wrong after uncontrolled resizing. Digital displays may therefore supply a live scale bar that updates with zoom.

Practical ruleOn a resized copy, trust a scale bar that was resized with the chart before trusting the printed RF.

When chart length and Earth distance are known, divide Earth distance in chart units by chart length. The result is the RF denominator.

Five centimetres represents seven nautical miles

Seven nautical miles = 7 × 1,852 × 100 = 1,296,400 centimetres. RF = 5 ÷ 1,296,400. Divide numerator and denominator by 5 to obtain 1:259,280, commonly rounded to about 1:260,000.

Calculator order

Evaluate the Earth distance in chart units first, then divide by the chart length. This directly displays the denominator. If chart length is entered first, the calculator returns a small decimal and an extra reciprocal step is required.

Do not stop at 5:1,296,400A representative fraction is conventionally reduced to numerator 1, giving 1:259,280.

The same scale equation solves every simple-scale problem. Rearrange it according to the unknown, and keep units visible until the answer is converted to the requested form.

Finding Earth distance

On a 1:5,000,000 chart, a line measures 1.7 centimetres. Earth distance = 1.7 × 5,000,000 = 8,500,000 centimetres = 85 kilometres. Dividing by 1.852 gives 45.9 nautical miles.

Finding chart length

On a 1:1,000,000 chart, 50 kilometres equals 5,000,000 centimetres. Chart length = 5,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 5 centimetres, or about 1.97 inches.

Scale and a standard parallel

Some projections have one or more standard parallels where the chart surface conceptually meets the reduced Earth and scale is correct. If a question asks for nominal scale on such a chart, use the stated standard parallel or parallel of origin. Scale away from it may expand or contract according to the projection. Those projection-specific corrections are developed in the Mercator and Lambert chapters.

Large scale, small scale and exam checks

A large-scale chart shows a smaller area with more detail. A small-scale chart shows a larger area with less detail. The denominator creates the apparent contradiction.

Why the names are correct

The fraction 1/50,000 is numerically larger than 1/5,000,000, even though its denominator is smaller. Therefore large scale means a smaller denominator.

  1. Identify whether RF, chart length or Earth distance is unknown.
  2. Convert chart and Earth distances to matching units.
  3. Use RF = CL ÷ ED and rearrange once.
  4. Keep full precision until the requested final unit.
  5. Check that larger denominators produce shorter chart lengths for the same Earth distance.
