Technical General and Technical Specific sound like two versions of the same exam, and that similarity in naming causes more confusion among CPL students than almost any other pair of DGCA papers. They are not two versions of the same thing. They test two different kinds of knowledge, drawn from two different kinds of sources, and mixing up how you prepare for each one is a common reason students walk into Technical Specific still thinking in Technical General terms, and fail on precision rather than understanding.

Why the two names get confused

Both papers sit under the aircraft technical portion of the CPL ground syllabus, both use similar vocabulary, structures, systems, powerplant, and both feel, on the surface, like they are asking about the same aeroplane. The difference is not in the vocabulary. It is in the level of detail and the source the questions are drawn from. Technical General asks you to reason about how systems work in principle, using generic values and generic component names that apply across aircraft types. Technical Specific asks you to recall the actual figures, actual system layout, and actual procedures published for one named aircraft type, the one you are training on.

Technical General: type-independent theory

Technical General is written so that a candidate training on a Cessna 172 in Mumbai and a candidate training on a Diamond DA42 in Bengaluru sit the same paper with the same correct answers. It covers structures, piston and turbine powerplant theory, generic aircraft systems (hydraulics, pneumatics, electrics, fuel, ice protection), common flight instruments, and general airworthiness concepts. None of it depends on which aircraft you personally fly. A question about how a hydraulic relief valve protects a system from overpressure is true of hydraulic systems in general, not of one manufacturer's implementation.

Because it is type-independent, Technical General can be studied entirely from a generic reference text well before you have started flying, and in fact should be studied that way, since it forms the theoretical foundation that Technical Specific later builds on for your particular aircraft.

Technical Specific: your aircraft's own book

Technical Specific is examined on the specific aircraft type you train on, and its source is not a generic textbook but the Pilot's Operating Handbook or Aircraft Flight Manual for that exact type. This includes the type's limitations section (airspeed limits, weight and balance figures, engine operating limits), how its systems are actually implemented (a Cessna 172's fuel system, for example, gravity-fed from two wing tanks, versus a Diamond DA42's pumped, twin-engine fuel system are genuinely different arrangements, not variations on a theme), published performance figures (takeoff and landing distances, climb performance, fuel consumption at given power settings), and the type's specific emergency and abnormal procedures as laid out in its checklist.

None of this content is generic. A limitation or a procedure step that is correct for one type can be wrong for another, which is exactly why Technical Specific cannot be studied from a one-size-fits-all book the way Technical General can.

Why Technical Specific varies by school and type

Indian flying schools operate a handful of common training types, most often the Cessna 172, and the Diamond DA40 and DA42, though the exact fleet varies by school. Whichever type a student trains on determines which POH or AFM their Technical Specific paper is drawn from. A DA42 student is examined on twin-engine systems, such as engine-out procedures and cross-feed fuel management, that simply do not exist on a single-engine Cessna 172 syllabus. This is not an inconsistency in DGCA's exam design. It reflects a real difference in what each candidate needs to know to safely operate the aircraft they are actually being trained to fly.

The practical consequence is that you cannot borrow a friend's Technical Specific notes if they trained on a different type, and generic online question banks not tied to your specific aircraft are far less reliable for this paper than they are for Technical General.

Which reference maps to which paper

For Technical General, the Oxford ATPL Aircraft General Knowledge series is the standard reference used across Indian flying schools, covering airframes, systems, powerplant, and instrumentation in the type-independent form the paper expects. It is a genuinely useful, thorough foundation and is worth reading in full regardless of which aircraft you end up training on.

For Technical Specific, there is no equivalent generic textbook, and looking for one is a common early mistake. The real source is your own aircraft's POH or AFM, supplemented by whatever type-specific study material your flying school issues, since schools often prepare condensed notes or question sets built directly around their own fleet's manual. Treat the POH as the primary text for this paper in the same way the Oxford series is the primary text for Technical General.

Worked comparison: the fuel system, two ways

Technical General angle
Describe the general function of an aircraft fuel system.

A fuel system stores fuel and delivers it to the engine at the correct pressure and flow rate under all normal and expected abnormal flight conditions, including varying attitudes and altitudes. It typically includes storage tanks, a means of feeding fuel toward the engine (by gravity or by pump), filtration to remove contaminants, a way to select or isolate tanks, and gauges or sensors that let the pilot monitor quantity and pressure. This description is true of fuel systems generally and does not depend on any single aircraft type.

State the fuel system arrangement and unusable fuel quantity for [your training aircraft type], as published in its POH.

This answer cannot be reasoned out from general principles. It has to be read directly from the type's POH fuel system section and limitations chapter, since the tank arrangement (for example, two wing tanks feeding by gravity versus a pumped system feeding from separate tanks in a twin), the unusable fuel quantity, and any tank selector procedure are specific published figures and steps for that exact aircraft, not something a generic textbook can supply.

The two answers describe the same underlying system, a fuel system, but they are not interchangeable, and this is the clearest way to see the boundary between the two papers. If you can explain a system's job and general behaviour without naming numbers, you are thinking in Technical General terms. The moment the question needs an exact figure or a checklist step for one aircraft, you have crossed into Technical Specific territory.

Is Technical Specific harder than Technical General?
Not harder conceptually, but less forgiving of vague knowledge. Technical General rewards understanding of general principles, while Technical Specific requires exact numbers, limitations, and procedure steps for one particular aircraft type, so it punishes approximation more than Technical General does.
Which aircraft type will my Technical Specific exam be based on?
Whichever type your flying school trains you on, commonly types such as the Cessna 172 or Diamond DA40 and DA42 in India. The exam is set against that specific type's POH or AFM, so two students at different schools can sit different Technical Specific content.
Do the Oxford ATPL books cover Technical Specific?
No. The Oxford ATPL Aircraft General Knowledge series covers Technical General's type-independent theory. Technical Specific has to be prepared from your own aircraft's POH or AFM and your school's type-specific study material, since no generic textbook carries another aircraft's actual limitations and figures.
Can I prepare Technical Specific before I've started flying my type?
You can begin reading the POH and building familiarity with its layout early, but the material only really sticks once you are flying the type and can connect limitations and procedures to what you are actually seeing in the cockpit.
